About Negril, Jamaica

  • Arawak and Taino Origins: Before European colonization, the area that is now Negril was  inhabited by the indigenous Arawak and Taino peoples.
  • Name Origin: The name “Negril” is a shortened version of “Negrillo”, as it was named by the Spanish in the 15th century, referring to the black cliffs south of the village.
  • Pirate Haven: In the 17th and 18th centuries, Negril was often used as a base by pirates, including the infamous Calico Jack.
  • British Conquest: Negril became part of the British colony after the English conquest of Jamaica in 1655.
  • Sugar Plantations: During the colonial era, the area around Negril was predominantly used for sugar cane plantations, worked by enslaved Africans.
  • Role in the Slave Trade: Negril’s location made it a point of entry for slave ships coming from Africa to Jamaica.
  • Emancipation and Aftermath: Following the abolition of slavery in 1834, Negril, like much of Jamaica, underwent significant social changes as freed slaves began to establish their own communities.
  • Fishing Tradition: Before its tourism boom, Negril was primarily a fishing village, and fishing remains an important part of local culture.
  • The West End Cliffs: The iconic West End Cliffs have a geological history dating back millions of years, forming a natural barrier that historically isolated Negril.
  • Legacy of the West Indian Whistling Duck: The nearby morass area is home to the endangered West Indian Whistling Duck, a species with historical significance for the local ecosystem.
